Ben Stokes has been known to come up with superlative efforts whenever the chips are down, but he was dismissed at the wrong time in the second Test against Australia in Brisbane. The England skipper was visibly angry and disappointed as he tossed his bat and punched his helmet as he walked back.

‌After an ordinary batting display in the last session of the third day of the Brisbane Test, England were keen to put in a fight against Australia and not hand victory on a plate to the hosts. The overnight pair of Ben Stokes and Will Jacks showed great patience and restraint to survive the first session of the penultimate day without losing a wicket.

Starting at 134/6, the pair added 59 runs in 24 overs in the first period to go in with a lead of 16 runs. They continued to be defiant, extending their stand to 96 runs in 221 balls before stand-in skipper Steve Smith pulled off a blinder to end Jacks’ gritty stay.

The England skipper completed a patient half-century, taking 148 balls to reach his milestone, in the next over but the departure of his long-standing partner seemed to finally irk him. The all-rounder ended up nicking a short of a length delivery from Michael Neser, who came from around the wicket, that pitched around off stump before straightening up.

It looked like all the effort till then had gone in vain as the southpaw tossed his bat up in the air while starting his walk back. He was angry and frustrated, and even punched his helmet, realising that the visitors had their last hopes pinned on him.

It turned out to be true as well as the visitors’ innings ended soon after at 241, setting a paltry target of 65 for the Aussies to chase. Twitter was shattered as they were getting ready for Headingley 2.0 only to be left to rue alongside the England skipper.
