Desperate times call for desperate measures and when your team has not won the season opener in 12 years, circumstances don't get more desperate. Mumbai Indians were racing towards a defeat against Chennai Super Kings on Sunday, despite Suryakumar Yadav's left-field attempts to turn things around.

Chennai Super Kings rode on the back of a flying Ruturaj Gaikwad to put up 62 runs in the powerplay alone while chasing a relatively paltry target of 156 against the Mumbai Indians in their season opener at Chepauk. The Chennai skipper's 67-run stand against Rachin Ravindra for the second wicket came in just 37 deliveries and by the time he departed in the eighth over, the hosts were left needing nearly run-a-ball to put Mumbai severely on the back foot. Suryakumar Yadav was visibly exasperated, the stand-in skipper well aware his side were quickyl crashig to a 13th successive season opener defeat, and tried to pull out all the stops in hopes of stopping Chennai in their tracks.

In the 10th over, T20 debutant Vignesh Puthur turned one sharply across Shivam Dube who tried to got a big heave but failed to connect and lost his shape in the process. Ryan Rickelton was quick to flick off the bails as the team went up for a stumping, only to be met with a firm no from the square-leg umpire. The rejection did not sit well with the stand-in skipper, and an animated SKY's voice immediately echoed on the stump mic, "Sir, check to karlo, upar tha [Sir, at least check, his leg was raised]," while further demonstrating his point with a raised feet. Nevertheless, the umpire stood by his decision and the replays showed it was more than fair considering Dube had not even lifted his foot from the crease in the first place.

The incident sent quite some waves down Twitterati as they highlighted the sheer hopelessness of Mumbai's situation.
