The Big Bash League has never shied away from trying new things, and the Melbourne Renegades vs Perth Scorchers match saw the roofs closed at Docklands Stadium. That helped Finn Allen extend his stay in the middle after the batter’s miscued skier hit the roof before landing on the ground.

‌With overcast and cloudy conditions forcing the organisers of the Big Bash League to close the roof at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne Renegades opted to bowl against Perth Scorchers on Thursday. However, an unperturbed Finn Allen got off the mark with a six off left-arm spinner Hassan Khan, with Mitchell Marsh also joining in to take the visitors to 41/0 at the end of the four-over powerplay in Melbourne.

After putting spin from both ends in the next two overs, the Renegades skipper Will Sutherland brought himself on in the seventh over. He frustrated both batters as they were unable to get a boundary off the medium pacer in the first four balls of the over.

And that forced Allen to look for the aerial route on the next, as he ended up miscuing a slog. With Sutherland bowling an off-cutter on a good length that pitched around off stump before making its way into the batter, the Kiwi batter aimed for the moon, and the change of pace meant he skied it towards mid-wicket.

Just as Jake Fraser-McGurk lined up to take the catch, the ball hit the top of the roof before making its way straight down. The umpires immediately got together to decide whether that should be awarded a six as the fielder also came running in.

In a light-hearted comment, McGurk shouted at Allen that there was no way that the shot could have gone for a six as the officials awarded a solitary run, and play continued. Twitter was not impressed as a fortunate Allen extended his stay in the middle, courtesy of the box cricket-like rules.
