IND vs NZ | Twitter laughs as despairing review saves oblivious Dube from LBW after middling ball

Every elite athlete yearns to enter the flow state at will, a zone where it is just them and their discipline in complete harmony. Shivam Dube seemed to have found himself such in Vizag as he smashed New Zealand to all parts, so much so that he nearly walked off to a blatantly incorrect call.

India endured a rare battting failure in the fourth T20I against New Zealand in Vishakhapatnam on Wednesday as they collapsed to 82/5 chasing a mammoth target of 216. Just when all hope seemed lost, Shivam Dube entered the fray with an authoritative first ball six and by the 13th over had cracked three more of them to race to 46 in just 13 deliveries to bring down the required run rate from nearly 15 to close to 12. With Harshit Rana batting at the other end and four tialenders to follow, all hopes rested on his shoulders but the veteran seemed to have let his team down when he apparently succumbed to a yorker in the 13th over, only for replays to unveil a dramatic narrative.

Having just been smashed over midwicket for a six, Duffy went full and striaght on the fourth ball of his third over hoping to catch Dube by surprise. The plan seemed to work as Dube, stood deep in his crease, tried to help the ball away towards fine leg but the Kookaburra struck his pads square in front of the stumps and the umpire wasted little time in raising his finger. Dube looked devastated, having spurned a golden opportunity to pull off a miraculous win for India amidst a starcast where he usually has to play second fiddle, and began to walk off with a sullen face even as he signalled for a review out of pure desperation. To the surprise of all at the venue, the replays showed that not only had Dube managed to get some bat on the ball on the full, but he had nearly middled it to cause a huge deflection onto his pads such that the TV umpire did not even need Ultra Edge to come to a decision. Dube, completely oblivious to the fact, was ecstatic at having earned a lifeline and grinned from ear to ear as he bumped fists with Rana before returning to the crease to continue his endeavours.

Twitterati could not help but see the funny side of things.

In high-scoring T20 encounters, the game can at times move too fast to absorb all the action occurring, and Wednesday in Vizag was no different. Chasing 216, a collapsing India found hope in an explosive Shivam Dube knock and an absurd comedy of errors from the Kiwis ensured the spark stayed alive.
