The selection committee didn't pick Shubman Gill for the T20I squad. The squad was announced for two series and one tournament, and the Indian skipper didn't find his place. However, the committee revealed that it wants Gill to focus on Test and ODI format.

‌Shubman Gill is leading the Indian team across two formats but he is not a part of the team in the third format. Even after giving his best for Gujarat Titans in consecutive IPL seasons, he was not able to make it back to the team after being snubbed following the Asia Cup 2025.
It was a tough call by the selectors to make their skipper out of the shortest format. But still, the Indian team looks strong in the T20I format, with the team's batting line-up packed from top to bottom. Along with that, the selectors have revealed the actual reason why they didn't go with Shubman Gill in the shortest format of the game.
The selection committee said that they want Shubman Gill to focus on ODIs and Test format more. With the WTC final and ODI World Cup coming next year, it is necessary to have the Indian skipper at his best across these two formats. After these two tournaments, he would be in contention for the 2028 Olympics and T20 World Cup.

Our Take

The selectors have decided not to put much pressure on Shubman Gill right now. If he would have been picked in the T20I side too, the workload management for the Indian captain would have been challenging. Now with Gill focusing on Tests and ODIs, he would be able to give his best to the Indian team as a captain and eventually continue giving his top-notch performances in the Indian Premier League.
