Mumbai Indians will be going against Kolkata Knight Riders in their opening match for IPL 2026. But the opening games have not been the one which MI fans would like to cherish. The last time they won an IPL opening game, it was back in IPL 2012.

Mumbai Indians, one of the most dominant teams in IPL history, have an unwanted record to their name. Ever since the IPL 2013 season, the team has not managed to win even a single opening match. The last time they managed to win an IPL opening game was back in 2012, which makes the fans a bit worried.

Going against the Chennai Super Kings, the Mumbai Indians had a good start by bowling them all out at 112. Later, the team went on to complete the chase with 8 wickets and 19 balls remaining to win an opener.

Since that win came back in IPL 2012, here's how things were like in Indian cricket at that time:

  • Mumbai Indians had no IPL title.
  • Sachin Tendulkar was a full-time player.
  • Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag were the openers of the ICT.
  • Virat Kohli only had 12 international centuries.
  • Rohit didn't even score a double century.
  • Joe Root didn't make his international debut.

Looking at things now, fans could realise how it all has changed since the team's last IPL opener win.

Our Take

The IPL openers have been one thing which Mumbai Indians didn't like over the last few years. Even though they have managed to win 5 finals since IPL 2013, they didn't even manage to win a single IPL opener. However, things could change this time in the IPL 2026 edition.

Mumbai Indians will be going against Kolkata Knight Riders at Wankhede Stadium. With players such as Rohit Sharma, Tilak Varma, Jasprit Bumrah, Trent Boult, and many more, they have a strong and composed line-up. Fans remain eager to see whether MI will end the wait this time or not.
