Mohammed Shami has finally spoken about his retirement recently. As he prepares for the upcoming IPL season, he participated in an interview with Shubhankar Mishra. There, he talked about his retirement plans, and also indicated his availability for the 2027 World Cup.

Mohammed Shami will be beginning his IPL journey with a new team, as he plays for Lucknow Super Giants. The team plays its first game of the season against Delhi Capitals tomorrow, with Shami representing them for the first time. This IPL will also be important for several players, as the selectors will keep an eye for the World Cup squad.

And this also comes as an opportunity for Mohammed Shami to be in contention. He has done his best for the Indian team in the last World Cup, but didn't make it to the squad since the Champions Trophy. Recently, he was also asked questions about his retirement from the game.

Shami responded to them by saying, “I am not even thinking of retirement right now because such thoughts pull you down. I’ll leave cricket the day I wake up and decide to get bored. But neither am I bored nor am I lazy. I am enjoying.”

Our Take

Shami has been a vital player for the Indian team when it comes to the ICC events. Whether it was the 2019 World Cup, 2023 World Cup, or even the Champions Trophy 2025, he contributed well for the team with the ball. Even though the selectors have not set their eyes on him for a long time, he still has not lost hope.

He has indicated that he is not thinking of retiring anytime soon. This also keeps the hopes of having Shami in the World Cup squad, if he does well and the selectors set their eyes on him. But if it doesn't go as planned, his presence would surely be missed in the Indian team on the big occasion.
