Former Manchester United star Louis Saha has said that he was surprised that the club decided not to go after Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld during the summer transfer window. The forward who made his name playing in the Premier League exclaimed that it came as a 'complete mystery' to him.

The Red Devils have been linked with numerous players across Europe throughout the transfer window. However, the club managed to conclude just one piece of business on deadline day, with Romelu Lukaku finally able to seal his exit from Old Trafford. The Belgian striker joined Inter Milan for £73million after finding himself out of favour and surplus to manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s plans.

"Why United didn't trigger Alderweireld's release clause is a complete mystery to me," Saha told Bwin. "He's been excellent for Tottenham and would have instantly strengthened United's defence. When you look at the money United have spent on defenders this summer, they could have got themselves an absolute bargain who still has a lot of years of football to play. United clearly made Maguire the main target, but the pair could have been a real force together.”

The Premier League giants have invested quite heavily in this transfer window, bringing Daniel James, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Harry Maguire to the squad. While they are only three players, the club broke the world record fee for Maguire. But, with Alderweireld available for only £25 million, there is a chance that United have missed out sorely by not getting the Spurs centre back.
