Chelsea free to spend in January after CAS lifts their transfer ban

Chelsea’s appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has been successful with manager Frank Lampard set to be given the January window to help reinforce his side. The Blues were given a two window ban last season for violation rules regarding youth players and have served half of the ban.

The outcome does allow manager Frank Lampard to splurge in the summer with Goal reporting that their appeal to the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) was successful. The report further added that while the CAS found that the Blues did violate Articles 19.1 and 1.3 (related to the international transfer of minors), the number of players were significantly less than what FIFA claimed.

That has seen the CAS reduce the sanction to one single transfer ban, which Chelsea served during the 2019 summer window, and have cut their fine by half. This does allow the London side to spend heavily with the transfer ban not stopping the rumour mill from linking them with players. This is not the first time CAS has done this, with Real Madrid getting their two window ban reduced to one in 2016.

Reports indicate that Frank Lampard will now have just over £150 million to spend in the winter with the club heavily linked with players across Europe. The likes of Wilfried Zaha, Ben Chilwell, Ruben Dias, Timo Werner, Moussa Dembele and Jadon Sancho are all on their wish-list reported the Telegraph and the Athletic.
