Arsenal sack Unai Emery after 18 months in charge

Despite a vote of confidence by the board last month, Arsenal have parted ways with manager Unai Emery and Freddie Ljungberg is set to take over the team for the time being. The Spaniard has been relieved of duties effective immediately with the former PSG boss having spent 18 months with the club. Emery replaced legendary manager Arsene Wenger ahead of the 2018/19 season and took Arsenal to the Europa League final, losing to Chelsea.

But he struggled to get the club off the mark this season and the North Londoners are now seven games without a win in all competitions with a 2-1 defeat to Eintracht Frankfurt being the latest in the run. The club’s statement went on to admit that it was a performance-based decision and co-owner Josh Kroneke also thanked the Spaniard and his coaching staff in their attempt to get the club back to competing at a much higher level.

“Our most sincere thanks go to Unai and his colleagues who were unrelenting in their efforts to get the club back to competing at the level we all expect and demand. We wish Unai and his team nothing but future success,” Kroenke said reports Arsenal.com.
