Real Madrid wanted me, claims Lucas Hernandez

Lucas Hernandez signed with current German champions Bayern Munich this summer for an amount of €80 million. He was one of the most wanted players during the latest transfer window, and apparently Real Madrid were one of the clubs in talks to acquire centre back, in order to improve their defense.

According to Goal, Lucas Hernandez admitted that interest was shown by Spanish giants Real Madrid. There were talks held between both Madrid clubs but nothing materialised in the end, so Bayern took advantage of the situation to acquire a much-needed defender for their backline. Since then, the former Atletico Madrid star has been one of the club's standout stars despite injury concerns. He's currently the leader of Bayern's defence along Niklas Sule, and could prove vital for the German team success this season.

The 23-year-old went on to explain the process this summer, telling reporters he couldn't switch from Atletico to Real. Not only that, Hernandez went on to add that Bayern Munich told him they'll give him Philip Lahm's number which impressed the Frenchman.

"Real had already made a move for me, it’s true, but not this summer. And I wouldn’t go there. Not after having worn the colours of Atletico for such a long time." When we were in discussions, they asked me what number I wanted. I told them I would have 21. They told me that was Philipp Lahm’s number and that no-one had worn it since he had retired, but they told me they’d give me it if I signed for them. It’s just one example of the confidence that they’ve placed in me." Hernandez told Goal.
