Former Chelsea striker Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink has insisted that Romelu Lukaku didn’t show any desire to turn around his fortunes in front of goal despite being given the chance by Thomas Tuchel in their game against Arsenal. The Belgian signed for Chelsea from Inter in the previous summer.

Romelu Lukaku established himself as one of the best finishers in European football throughout his time at West Brom, Everton, Manchester United, and Inter in the past decade. The Belgian striker signed for Chelsea for a club record fee for his second spell at the club as he looked destined to be their star man in front of goal.

However, Lukaku has failed to meet the set expectations this season as he has failed to nail down a starting spot in the team despite making a bright start to the campaign. The Belgium international has only managed to score in the Premier League only five times in 20 appearances.

The 28-year-old was selected by Tuchel to make his first Premier League start since February against Arsenal on Wednesday but the striker never got going as he failed to end his goal drought. Former Blues striker Hasselbaink criticized the former Inter man for his performance and called on him to show more desire on the pitch.

"Lukaku, Christensen, Sarr and Alonso - they were just not good enough for a Chelsea team that should be challenging for winning the Premier League. Lukaku, you've not had the best of seasons, you get an opportunity - go and show somebody you are the man. Show you really want it. Go and show that desire. I didn't see it,” Hasselbaink told Sky Sports.

"I really want him to do well, this team needs a No9. Then you see Kai Havertz come in and he goes in spaces, he wants the ball, he's running left, right and centre. Not everything is coming off but he's trying. I'm not seeing that from Lukaku. I'm not saying everything is his fault but he's leading the line, do some more,” he added.
