Barcelona’s Frenkie de Jong has refuted rumours that he is unhappy at the club but did admit that he hoped he would win more trophies with the La Liga side in his two year spell. The Dutch international signed for the club in January 2019, arriving in the summer, and has made 122 appearances.

Over the years, few players have come close to replicating what Sergio Busquets has produced for Barcelona but when Frenkie de Jong emerged at Ajax, many believed he would. So much so, that Barcelona went and signed the Dutch midfielder in 2019 but things haven’t quite gone to plan. For one, De Jong and Busquets are two different players although the Dutch international can eventually replace the Spaniard as a holding midfielder.

But with Barcelona struggling for form and consistency, things have only just changed under Xavi Hernandez with the two midfielders doing ever so well together. Yet, it has seen rumours indicate that De Jong is unhappy at the club but the 24-year-old has refuted those claims and admitted that he is “very happy” at Barcelona. However, the former Ajax man did add that he had hoped to win more with the La Liga side than he has managed so far.

“I’m very happy I’m at Barcelona: from a young age I’ve wanted to be here, so in that way it has been a dream come true. But, of course, I would have liked to win more trophies than we did in my first two years. I expected more in that sense, let’s put it that way. But other than that, I’m very happy here and hopefully for many more years,” De Jong told the Guardian.
