As the summer transfer window edges closer to its deadline, Aston Villa have been linked with a potential £40m move for Liverpool midfielder Harvey Elliott. The 22-year-old, who played a starring role in England’s successful defence of the under-21 European Championship, has seen his opportunities at Anfield reduced following a wave of new signings under manager Arne Slot. Elliott has made 92 Premier League appearances for Liverpool, scoring five goals, and has already won both the Premier League and League Cup twice.

Former Liverpool and Birmingham City winger Jermaine Pennant believes Elliott should seek a fresh challenge, suggesting Villa could provide the ideal platform under Unai Emery. Pennant highlighted Elliott’s versatility, capable of playing as a central midfielder, attacking midfielder, or out wide, though he is yet to secure a fixed role. Villa’s recent sale of academy graduate Jacob Ramsey to Newcastle United may free up funds for Monchi and the club’s recruitment team to pursue Elliott.

Villa have already added striker Evann Guessand and goalkeeper Marco Bizot this summer, while winger Leon Bailey has left on loan to Bayer Leverkusen. Meanwhile, Bundesliga club RB Leipzig are also in talks for Elliott, having reportedly agreed personal terms but still needing to settle a fee with Liverpool.
