When the UEFA Champions League quarterfinal clash between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich unfolded, it produced both drama and a historic milestone despite Madrid’s 2-1 defeat. Kylian Mbappé scored in the 74th minute to give his side hope after falling 2-0 behind, but a strong performance from Manuel Neuer denied them a late equaliser. Mbappé’s goal carried huge significance, as it took his tally to 14 goals in the current Champions League campaign.

With this, he became only the seventh player in history to reach this mark in a single season. He now joins an elite list that includes Lionel Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo, Robert Lewandowski, Karim Benzema, Ruud van Nistelrooy, and José Altafini. Despite this achievement, Ronaldo’s record of 17 goals in a single Champions League season, set in 2013-14, remains unmatched.

Mbappé now sits just 3 goals away from that landmark. However, to challenge this record, Real Madrid must overturn their deficit in the second leg and progress further in the competition, keeping Mbappé’s historic chase alive.
