Sourav Ganguly, one of India’s most successful cricket captains, said that he would not mess up like he did when he recommended Greg Chappell as coach, and would hopefully select the right person this time. He is now a part of the BCCI Cricket Advisory Committee assigned to pick the next coach.

The Advisory Committee also has VVS Laxman and Sachin Tendulkar, and the trio are set to interview 21 candidates, shortlisted from 57 applicants, for the post of head coach of the team.

"I have never had the chance of giving an interview (for the team India coaching job). Hopefully someday will sit for it," Ganguly said at an event, News18 reported.

Among the front-runners for the job are the trio’s former India team-mate Anil Kumble, former India team manager Ravi Shastri, and former Sri Lanka coach Tom Moody.

Ganguly also said, “It’s amazing how life is. Twenty years back I first played for the country. Now I have the opportunity to select a coach. I messed it up in 2005-06 and I have been given the opportunity again. I had taken an interview once and it did not go off well.”

The 43-year old was captaining India when Greg Chappell was appointed to succeed John Wright as the head coach. Ganguly had apparently recommended the Australian but ironically had a fall-out with him which led to his removal from captaincy and axing from the team.

"Honestly two and a half years ago I was thinking of being here myself, and now I am selecting one. Hopefully, we will do it correctly this time, whoever it is. This time I have support from Sachin, Laxman and the BCCI secretary, so hopefully we will be selecting the right person," News18 quoted Ganguly as saying.

The southpaw is the president of Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) and had earlier said he was unsure about the possibilities of his running for India coach or BCCI president.

Post the interviews, the panel will recommend the names to BCCI President Anurag Thakur. It is likely the BCCI will name the coach on June 24th at the Working Committee meeting in Dharamshala.
