IPL 2017 | Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Royal Challengers Bangalore - Player Ratings
Defending champions Sunrisers Hyderabad have gotten their campaign off to a perfect start by beating Royal Challengers Bangalore by 35 runs in the opening encounter. Earlier, put into bat, Hyderabad scored 207/4, aided by half-centuries from Yuvraj Singh and Moises Henriques
Sunrisers Hyderabad
David Warner - (5/10)
The Sunrisers captain got off to a good start with a boundary in the very first over and also accumulated 10 runs in the next one before a lazy shot saw him making the long walk back to the dressing room. Still, a lot of cricket left in the IPL, so not too much to worry about if you are a Sunrisers fan.
Shikhar Dhawan - (7/10)
Finally, the Indian opener looked to be in good knick after the disastrous home season that saw him being dropped from the team. He even smashed Watson for 17 runs in a single over but threw away his wicket after getting to 40 in 30 balls. Encouraging signs though!
Ben Cutting - (7/10)
Cutting hit Watson for 16 runs in the final over of the inning but proved to be little expensive with the ball. But he was a livewire on the field today and the way he ran Kedar Jadhav out, made him a valuable player of the day.
Moises Henriques - (8/10)
Had it not been his partnerships with Dhawan and Yuvraj, Sunrisers would not have crossed the 200-run barrier today. His 52-run innings helped the defending champions get going after the early dismissal of skipper David Warner.
Yuvraj Singh - (9/10)
What a performance by the southpaw! At times it looked like vintage Yuvraj Singh smashing everything past the boundaries. The 35-year-old smashed his fastest half-century in the IPL, reaching the 50-run mark in just 23 balls. He also took two catches while fielding and if he continues like this, Sunrisers might have a good chance of retaining the trophy.
Deepak Hooda - (6/10)
Not only did he score a quickfire 16 off 12 balls at the fag end of the SRH innings, Hooda got rid of dangerous Chris Gayle after being smashed for a six a ball earlier. That was his only over in the match but it would have given the Hyderabad players the confidence of coming back into the game just as Gayle looked to be getting out of the second gear.
Naman Ojha - (5/10)
Although the Madhya Pradesh batsman didn’t get a chance to bat, his wicket-keeping was pretty ordinary today. He missed an easy catch and was not that good in collecting the ball from the deep as well.
Bipul Sharma - (7/10)
Bipul Sharma has the knack of unsettling the batsmen with his off spin in the domestic arena. But while Afghan Rashid Khan made all the noise with the ball today, Warner handed the ball to Bipul just once, in which he repaid his captain’s trust by dismissing Sachin Baby.
Bhuvneshwar Kumar - (7/10)
One always knows what to expect from Bhuvneshwar Kumar - consistency and wickets. Last season’s purple cap winner has already taken a lead this season with two wickets at the expense of just 27 runs in his allotted four overs.
Ashish Nehra - (6/10)
The 37-year-old didn’t enjoy the best of days on the field today as he was smashed all over the park conceding 40 runs in his first three overs. But true to his nature, he made a comeback later on picking up two wickets on consecutive deliveries while conceding just two runs off the over.
Rashid Khan - (8/10)
What a debut it has turned out to be for the Afghan leggie! Hailing from a country, which doesn’t even have the ability to host a cricket match, Rashid made the cricketing world sit up and take notice of him in his four-over quota, where he managed to pick two wickets conceding 36 runs.
Royal Challengers Bangalore
Chris Gayle - (6/10)
The onus was on him to deliver on a day when Virat Kohli and AB de Villiers were missing from the teamsheet. He got off to the start that was expected from him scoring 32 off 20 balls but his eagerness to go after Hooda proved to be his undoing as he was caught by Warner at long off.
Mandeep Singh - (7/10)
As far as temperament goes, Mandeep is one of the gifted ones. But cricket, at this level, is seldom played only with aggression. Mandeep’s over-ambitious stroke play cost the team heavily as Rashid Khan disturbed his furniture when he was at 24.
Shane Watson - (4/10)
A day to forget for the former Australian all-rounder as memories from last year’s final would have come rushing back to him after conceding 16 runs in the last over of the innings. But that wasn’t unexpected as he had already contributed 25 runs to the SRH score in his first two overs. He did try to make amends with the bat scoring 22 off 17, but it was too little too late.
Kedar Jadhav - (6/10)
The Maharashtra pocket dynamite had a slow start to his innings but with Travis Head, he resurrected RCB’s innings. But like the ODI series against England, Jadhav failed to build on his innings and falling at 31. Had he stayed on the crease a little more time, the story could have been very different.
Sachin Baby - (4/10)
It was the perfect occasion where Baby could make a statement for bigger honors. With RCB plagued by a fully blown injury crises, the Kerala skipper had the opportunity to showcase his batting credentials on the big stage. However, as it turned out he could only manage a single run before falling prey to Bipul Sharma.
Travis Head - (6/10)
Supported Jadhav well after the dismissal of the openers as RCB tried to consolidate their innings. They looked well on course before Ben Cutting’s moment of magic sent Jadhav packing. When it came to taking on the role of the leader, Head might have just lost his head when he tried to take on Rashid Khan for a big hoick over long off but fell short of the boundary.
Stuart Binny - (5/10)
When Binny came out to bat, the Sunrisers had already taken control of the game thanks to the RCB top-order misfiring. There was hardly anything he could do to change the result of the game. Having said that, he did himself no favors with his 10-ball 11.
Tymal Mills - (6/10)
A good debut by the Englishman, not worth the Rs. 12 crores that RCB paid for him, though, still a decent one. The 24-year-old finished with figures of 1/31 in his designated four overs but more will be expected from him as the tournament progresses.
Sreenath Aravind - (4/10)
The 32-year-old Bengaluru man failed to live up to the expectations with both ball and bat. Aravind will need to do some soul searching after the game, given that he struggled to find good form in the domestic season as well.
Aniket Choudhary - (5/10)
With a barrage of short balls in the arsenal, RCB’s new recruit Aniket Choudhary had shown his temperament on his debut. Although he went for runs, fielders dropped two catches off his bowling that could have made it a night to remember for the 27-year-old.
Yuzvendra Chahal - (7/10)
Chahal, who rose to the prominence by performing well in the IPL, stayed true to his abilities and gave away only 22 runs at an economy rate of 5.50 on a pitch that was batsman friendly. He was responsible for the stemming the run-flow in the middle overs making sure that SRH were never out of sight. A first of many good performances to come this season.
