Reports : BCCI unofficially retire Sachin Tendulkar’s No. 10 jersey

Tendulkar retired from international cricket in 2013 after an incredible 24-year long illustrious career. The last time he had put on the No. 10 jersey was in his last ODI game, in 2012 against Pakistan, in Dhaka. He represented India in 463 ODIs and one T20I and always wore the same number.

After the legendary player quit the game no one opted to use the number until Thakur. Playing in his debut against Sri Lanka, Thakur was seen wearing the legendary jersey but was targetted by Tendulkar’s fans. In the match, Thakur delivered seven overs and conceded only 26 runs while claiming opener Niroshan Dickwella’s wicket. But cricket fans were not interested in his performance and the youngster got trolled him on social media. Later, in an interview, Thakur claimed that he had only donned the number due to numerology as the digits of his date of birth (16.10.1991) added up to 28 and 2+8 equals 10.

To avoid such controversy in the future, BCCI has reportedly decided to unofficially retire the No. 10 jersey for international matches. 

“It unnecessarily creates controversy and players get criticised,” a BCCI official told Indian Express. 

“So it’s better to retire the number unofficially. Players, though, can wear it when they play for India A or for say a non-international list A match but not during an international.”

When Thakur returned to India squad in October for the series against New Zealand, he was seen wearing the No. 54 jersey.
