The 2018 IPL opener between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings was a clear reminder of the sheer brilliance the tournament brings out in the player’s involved. A stunning knock of 68 off 30 balls by Dwayne Bravo and a valiant effort by an injured Kedar Jadhav won CSK the match in epic fashion.

It never gets old, does it? The cliche story of a hopeless cause that turned out to be an epic fairytale has been a highlight of the Indian Premier League since it was established in 2008. Last night’s match between old-dogs Chennai Super Kings and young-blood Mumbai Indians was a clear reminder of the mouth-watering games the IPL would offer throughout this month.

At 119/8 after 17 overs, all seemed over for the newly-returned CSK outfit after a collapse of the middle-order batsmen and an injury to Kedar Jadhav ruling them out of a potential victory. Enter West Indian power-hitter Dwayne Bravo, one of CSK’s old wardog who took the match to the home team as he smashed 20 off Mitchell McClenaghan in the 18th over to take CSK to 139/8 after 18 overs.

MI’s yorker specialist Jasprit Bumrah stepped in to thwart Bravo’s big shots in the 19th over, but to his surprise he was blown out of the water in similar manner to how McClenaghan was in the previous over. Bravo smashed two sixes off the first two deliveries of the over to put the pressure on Bumrah. He smashed another six off the penultimate delivery of the over before he was caught by Rohit Sharma off the last delivery of Bumrah.

This meant that a battered Kedar Jadhav had to come in to face Mustafizur Rahman aka ‘The Fizz’ in the final over of the match as CSK required 7 runs from 6 balls. Jadhav looked like a man in pain as he tried to flick the first three deliveries from Rahman into gaps, but failed to do so. But then he pulled off a masterpiece as he managed to play a scoop shot over fine leg which resulted in a magnificent six. This meant that CSK needed just one off 2 deliveries, but Jadhav wanted to end it in style and opted to go for a clean shot off the next delivery which raced all the way to the cover boundary to hand CSK an opening day victory against Mumbai Indians.
