VIDEO | "Dinesh Review System" off target as DRS shows three greens
After producing MS Dhoni-esque finishes and reviews, Dinesh Karthik was seen by many as the main contender for Dhoni's throne, once the latter decided to hang up his boots. But, he went for a disastrous review which saw the system returning with three green lights in Ishan Kishan’s favor.
After getting off to a great start, where KRR dismissed both the Mumbai Indians openers and restricted to just 72 runs off ten overs, KKR were in prime position in the must-win clash between the two sides. Sensing that the game was there for the taking, Karthik kept his best bowler on the day, Piyush Chawla, in the attack with the hope of getting another wicket.
After getting hit for a boundary on the first ball of the over, Chawla beat the young Ishan Kishan all hands down and immediately went up for an appeal. His captain behind the stumps responded and no sooner had the umpire given him not out, KKR went up for a review. To say what came up on the screen was an embarrassment is an understatement as the ball pitched well outside leg stump. As the replays showed the ball travel ahead after the bounce, it hit the pad outside off stump before missing the stumps as well.
It is very rare that the team taking the review messes up the review to such an extent that there is no room for any sort of excuse. To make things worse, Kishan, who had been batting at 11 off five balls at that time, ended up with 62 runs off just 21 balls. While Karthik has come up as the biggest challenger to MS Dhoni's position in the Indian team, it seems that he still has some things to learn before he can overtake the legendary Indian skipper.
