IPL 2018 | Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana to lead teams before IPL qualifier 1

Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have been named captains for the women’s exhibition Twenty20 match, which is scheduled to be played before the first IPL qualifier. BCCI announced the decision on Tuesday, which will be a stepping stone towards conducting a full-fledged IPL like women’s league.

Both Hampreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana have made a name for themselves in the T20 format of the game by giving some extraordinary performances in the recent past. Their excellence has been rewarded by BCCI by making them the captains of the two teams which would face off against each other before Qualifier 1 of the 2018 IPL.

Both the teams are filled with national team stars like – Mithali Raj, Jhulan Goswami, Veda Krishanmurthy, among others and also comprises international stars - Suzie Bates, Sophie Devine, Alyssa Healy, Megan Schutt, Beth Mooney, Dannielle Wyatt, and Daniel Hazell. 

The match will begin at 2 pm on May 22 at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai before the IPL Qualifier 1, which is slated to start at 7 pm on the same date.

“BCCI has been pulling out all stops to promote and nurture women’s cricket and this is a small yet significant step towards a prospective league involving women’s stars in the future,” Committee of Administrators member Diana Edulji was quoted in the release by scroll.in. “The IPL is the biggest and most popular league in the world and it has been a long-time endeavour to have a women’s league that can match the exuberance of IPL."
