Despite being widely believed to be a team sport, hardly any aspect of cricket requires a player to rely on his partner barring the running between the wickets. And it is here that the game has seen numerous misunderstandings, with Suryakumar Yadav and Quinton de Kock being the latest ones.
Mumbai Indians have just come to form in the IPL after yet another hot and cold start to the season and it was obvious that they would want to make the most of their momentum when they took on yet another inconsistent side in the form of Delhi Capitals on Thursday.
With Rohit Sharma and de Kock putting up a good opening start to the powerplay hitting 57 off the first 36 balls, the rest of the side just needed to capitalize on it. However, it is the routine stuff that is the hardest and Mumbai found it the hard way as after Sharma returned to the pavilion in the sixth over, Ben Cutting soon followed suit leaving the side to keep the ship steady rather than go all guns blazing.
Hence, Yadav and de Kock had to resort to run a ball against a very potent Delhi bowling side. The hosts tightened the screw with the field and immediately got a result. After Yadav cut Axar Patel’s delivery to backward point, he inclined forward looking to take a quick single with four runs coming off the first four deliveries.
However, all the pressure had forced the Indian batsman to forget making a call to his partner before he aborted his run. Hence, de Kock remained committed and some very quick thinking by Kagiso Rabada and Rishabh Pant meant that the South African found himself racing with Yadav to the finishing line at the striker’s end leaving the other end exposed.
