IPL 2019 | Shreyas Iyer is my favourite IPL captain, reveals Brad Hogg
While answering questions on Twitter, Brad Hogg named Shreyas Iyer as his favourite Indian Premier League skipper this season. Despite the presence of many international stars like Shikhar Dhawan and Kagiso Rabada among others, Iyer has remained unfazed while leading his side to second on the table.
Delhi Capitals are currently placed second on the points table and are well in contention to make it to the playoffs. Shreyas Iyer has been instrumental with the bat as well as with the captaincy and has done well to lead his side with example. Iyer was appointed as the captain of the side last season when, then skipper, Gautam Gambhir hung up his boots after a bad start to the season. The investment in Iyer has yielded some fruitful dividends for the Delhi side as they are one of the frontrunners this season with seven wins from 11 games.
Iyer has earned the trust of coach Ricky Ponting and advisor Sourav Ganguly and now former Australian bowler Brad Hogg has heaped praise on Iyer’s captaincy as well. The Aussie spinner has acknowledged his canny bowling changes which has helped Delhi be successful in the current campaign.
On asked about his favourite IPL skipper, Hogg responded, “Shreyas Iyer, there is no doubt about that. Delhi Capitals have been nowhere throughout the whole IPL in the previous editions. This year they are at the top because a young man has taken the responsibility with both bat and leadership out in the field. He is making the right decisions with his bowlers, has led from the front and has taken ownership of that job.”
Iyer has been in good form this season, scoring 281 runs in 11 games so far, but it is his captaincy that has garnered attention from a few former cricketers. The 24-year-old Iyer has done well while leading a team of experienced pros likes Shikhar Dhawan, Ishant Sharma, Trent Boult, Kagiso Rabada, and Rishabh Pant. Another win would in all probability, if not mathematically, seal the playoff spot for DC who play their next game against Royal Challengers Bangalore on Sunday.
