In the ongoing Ashes, umpiring decisions have come under intense scrutiny and it is hardly surprising that it made its appearance in Lauderhill too. Virat Kohli openly made fun of one such howler after Rishabh Pant’s DRS appeal resulted in Kieron Pollard taking a long walk back to the pavilion.

The exuberant display by the young Indian bowling unit was there for everyone to see and it was Navdeep Saini who was definitely the most impressive performer for India. With figures of 3/17, he had a field day on his international debut but the wicket to seal Kieron Pollard’s wicket has to be at the top of the pile, especially the drama that unfolded in the process.

On the third ball of the 20th over, Saini bowled a full toss which dipped on Pollard as he tried to slog it away. However, the batsman missed it completely and the ball struck him on the pads. Although the Indians were very loud in their appeal, the umpire turned it down thinking it was going above the stumps.

But Rishabh Pant was pretty convinced about the dismissal and suggested his captain to take the review. Upon replay, it was clear that the ball struck the Trinidadian on his thigh pad. Although height was not going to be an issue, because of the fact that Pollard was lowering his body weight, that was ruled out from the equation. UltraEdge ensured that there was no inside edge and further, HawkEye indicated that the ball was hitting the middle and off stump.

The third umpire overturned the decision instantly and looking at the replay, the Indian skipper, who was fielding at the deep during that time, couldn’t contain his laughter and even gestured towards his teammates, signalling the inefficiency of the umpire. Pollard, on the other hand, had a smile on his face while returning to the pavilion - a nervous one maybe?
