Ashes 2019 | We've been really poor at using DRS throughout this series, laments Justin Langer

Australian coach Justin Langer has expressed his disappointment over his team's usage of the DRS in the ongoing Ashes against England. A wasted review eventually cost Australia the match at Headingley, as they were unable to overturn an incorrect Ben Stokes LBW decision in the final over.

Australia's usage of technology throughout the entirety of the ongoing series was always questionable, and alas, they paid the price big time at Headingley as a wasted review ended up gifting England the victory. On the final ball of the 125th over, Nathan Lyon struck Ben Stokes on the pad plumb in front of the stumps but was given not out. However, by then, the Aussies had exhausted their reviews, thanks to a very silly one they took off the bowling of Pat Cummins in that over that preceded it.

Coach Justin Langer lamented his team's usage of the technology and admitted that the review that Paine & co took off the bowling of Cummins was due to sheer desperation.

"We've been really poor at it this whole series. We talked a lot about getting better at our reviews. There wasn't so many this game as there were at Lord's, but certainly we have control of that," Langer was quoted as saying by ESPNCricinfo.

"We have your way we go about it, but sometimes you don't quite get it right. To be fair, the one off Pat Cummins, it was getting pretty desperate at the end there and that often happens. That's just how it works out," he added.

The standards of umpiring have been pretty shallow throughout the Ashes so far, and there have been more than 10 decisions that have been overturned in just three matches. Asked if DRS plays on their minds, Langer said that the on-field umpires needed to instinctively make their decisions and not think about potential interference from technology. He also admitted that with DRS, it is always a 50-50 success rate.

"The umpire should make the decision he thinks is right regardless of reviews in my opinion. If they think it's out they should give it, if they don't they should give it not out," he said.

"The review system is as it is and sometimes they go your way, sometimes they don't," he added.
