Sourav Ganguly has stated that India will be benefited if they play Shubman Gill for the rest of the New Zealand series and may get another player for the World Cup. Sunil Gavaskar has also aired the same opinion and wanted India to give the 19-year-old a game in the remaining ODIs in New Zealand.

A classical batsman who has all the shots in the book and can also adapt his game to all formats without much change to his style of play, Gill was a talent to look forward to in the last one year. His record was so good that even the most casual of cricket followers also started to take notice of him, and his efforts and all the goodwill helped him find a place in the Indian side for the series against New Zealand, replacing KL Rahul.

However, he had to sit on the bench for the first three matches as India didn’t want to tinker with the team combination far too much and now with Virat Kohli being rested for the remainder of the tour, it came as an opportunity for him to finally make his India debut dream come true. Earlier, Virat Kohli praised the youngster highly and stated that he was not 10% of what Gill is when he was of his age. Ganguly and Gavaskar firmly support the idea of playing Gill in the last two games to create a larger pool for the World Cup.

"I think they should play Shubman Gill. He certainly deserves a chance in the team. He should play the rest of the series. Who knows, India might get another good player for the World Cup," Ganguly told India TV.

“Virat Kohli has also said that he didn’t bat like Gill when he was his age, which is a great thing to say for a captain,” Ganguly added.

Gavaskar believes that the two matches can give an idea how Gill adapts to the international cricket.

"Well because the No.3 spot is vacant, I would want to give Shubman Gill a game, give him a couple of games and see how he fares. If he gets to bat, you will get a fair idea how he is taking to international cricket," Gavaskar told India Today.
