India vs Pakistan | It’s very important to adapt quickly, asserts Vijay Shankar

With Pakistan not taking too many risks in the opening overs, India were dealt a huge blow when Bhuvneshwar Kumar had to be taken off the field for a hamstring injury. With two balls left to be bowled in the pacer’s third over, Virat Kohli threw the ball to World Cup debutant Vijay Shankar. The all-rounder had a dream first ball as he sent Imam-ul-Haq packing - trapping the opener plumb in front of his stumps. 

“Coming on to bowl so early was a surprise for me,” Shankar said after the game, reported Reuters.

“I am someone as a cricketer who feels it’s very important to be able to adapt quickly to the situation. It’s important to improve all aspects of my game so when the situation comes along, I will be ready.”

Along with a run a ball 15, Shankar also scalped the wicket of Sarfaraz Ahmed towards the fag end of the Pakistan innings. Shankar had appeared to be a guaranteed starter at the No. 4 spot before the World Cup, after Ambati Rayudu failed to make the cut, but the management decided to hand the role to KL Rahul. Shankar, however, is not too bothered about it all and asserted that he was ready to be flexible and do whatever the team needed.

“I have to be flexible in my role, batting and bowling. I just think it was a great opportunity to make my World Cup debut against Pakistan when there would be so many people watching the game. I tried to enjoy each moment,” he added.
