Onus on players to manage workload, says Sachin Tendulkar
Sachin Tendulkar is of the opinion that the cricketers are smart enough to manage their own workload during the upcoming IPL which is scheduled right before the 2019 Cricket World Cup. He also added that each player has different needs, so they will know when to take a break and when to play.
The most discussed topic currently in world cricket is about the toll the IPL will take on the players who will play in the World Cup. Different cricket boards have taken different actions, as some of them have asked their players to join the preparations at home, leaving the IPL midway whereas India captain Virat Kohli had stated that the players themselves will take care of it.
The highest run scorer in international cricket Sachin Tendulkar has conveyed that different individuals have contrasting needs and preferences, so it’s natural that their workload management is also bound to be distinct. Kohli would be delighted to know that someone who has been part of five World Cups also agrees with him.
"Preparation before the World Cup is different for each player and so their workload management will also be different," said Tendulkar, as reported by PTI.
"To me, momentum is important. Every individual should be smart enough to assess if he needs to take a break or he needs to play games to stay in the thick of things. So the responsibility is on the individual to take a call.”
The legendary batsman also backed up his opinion about workload management during the cash-rich league with examples. The IPL is scheduled to begin from March 23 and is expected to run until the second week of May while the quadrennial event in England and Wales will be played after the league between May 30 and July 14.
"As a pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah's workload will be very different from a pure batsman like Virat Kohli and a wicket-keeper batsman like Mahendra Singh Dhoni. All these players have a lot of experience and they will certainly make the right call," Tendulkar explained.
