Twitter reacts to heedless Dube and Philippe not running single off last ball to preserve their wickets

If there’s one thing that twelve seasons of IPL - and one and a half decade of T20 cricket - has taught us, it’s that every run matters. It could be a wide; it could be a no-ball; it could be a misfield; it could be a drop -  but at some point, mistakes will catch up with teams. Ask KXIP,  an umpiring error of all things came back to bite them on the backside to cost them the match. It remains to be seen if the callousness of Josh Phillipe and Shivam Dube would cost RCB the game, but, nevertheless, their skipper Virat Kohli has every reason to be livid at the duo. 

After losing AB de Villiers on the fourth ball of the final over of their innings, RCB’s No.6 batsman Josh Philippe managed to score just one run off the next two deliveries, leaving it to Shivam Dube to help the side push towards a score close to 170. With the score at 163/4, and one ball left in the innings, a meaty blow from the bat of the southpaw would have given Kohli’s side the perfect finish. 

However, what instead followed was heedlessness of the highest order. As Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled a bouncer, Dube tried to swat the ball, but ended up missing it completely. The ball went into the hands of the wicket-keeper Jonny Bairstow, but, nevertheless, there was more than enough time for the two batters to steal a bye off the final ball. However, flabbergastingly, both Dube and Philippe made no effort whatsoever to take the run. While Dube did not attempt to take off after missing the ball, Phillippe, on the other hand, stuttered and stopped running after taking a few steps. 

After a good few seconds of miscommunication and insanity, Dube finally stepped out of his crease, but it was to no avail as Philippe stood at the non-strikers’ end like a statue. Eventually, the confusion enabled the Sunrisers to inflict an easy run-out and restrict RCB to just 163. Well, talk about utter lack of game awareness.
