Pacers and aggression is a love story as old as time and while the combination can bear fruits on several occasions, futile attempts to intimidate batters can also backfire. Sam Curran experienced the latter at Eden Gardens after Andre Russell retaliated to his macho tactics with a boundary.

Kolkata Knight Riders put up another masterclass at the top of the order on Friday as Sunil Narine and Phil Salt combined for 138 runs off just 62 balls to place the hosts in a brilliant position halfway through the first innings. With the foundation set, the ensuing batters capitalized with rapid cameos and ensured the Purple Army breached the 250-run mark for the second time in the season. One such crucial knock in their effort was played by Andre Russell who contributed 24 runs at a strike rate of 200, including two maximums and as many boundaries. However, the Caribbean big hitter may not have managed such were it not for a certain Sam Curran firing him up early on in his innings.

Russell arrived in the 13th over after Curran had knocked over Salt and was immediately met by a pinpoint yorker that the West Indian managed to dig out back to the bowler. Curran took the Kookaburra in his grasp and with an aggressive reproach threatened to throw it at the strikers end, provoking Russell to quickly move out of the way. However, while Curran stood his ground with a steely expression, Russell simply laughed the incident off as he prepared for the next ball. Curran leaned into his attacking tactics by going short and Russell promptly dispatched him for a boundary, thus coming out on top of the mini battle.

Twitterati was thoroughly enthralled by the sequence of play and took to social media to express their reactions.

Only Sam Curran can do this to Russell!

Time and again, sporting decisions have attracted debates and it is no different in the case of cricket. Umpire Yeshwant Barde took his own sweet time to give a decision, only for it to go horribly wrong, during the clash between Punjab Kings and Kolkata Knight Riders at a jampacked Eden Gardens.
