ZIM vs IND | Twitter reacts to Gill-Sundar heroic assist India’s series lead in Harare
India defeated Zimbabwe by 23 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the five-match T20I series. A strong start from the openers followed by Shubman Gill and Ruturaj Gaikwad’s impactful knocks was backed by bowling brilliance that left Zimbabwe floored in the third T20I at the Harare Sports Club.
Brief Scores: IND: 182/4 [Gill: 66, Gaikwad: 49; Raza: 2/24] beat ZIM: 159/6 [Myers: 65*, Madande: 37; Sundar: 3/15] by 23 runs.
Winning the third consecutive toss, Indian captain Shubman Gill elected to bat first under sunny conditions with four changes being named. His new opening partner, Yashasvi Jaiswal offered a cracking start with Gill grafting during a 55-run powerplay. Their 67-run first-wicket partnership concluded in the eighth over with Abhishek Sharma following after India’s score reflected 80/1 in ten overs. Ruturaj Gaikwad accompanied the captain for a 72-run stand with a 19-run 13th over and an 18-run 17th over gaining the spotlight. The skipper fell for 66 in the 18th over while Gaikwad was unlucky to fall at 49 in the last over. However, a few lucky boundaries coupled with sloppy Zimbabwe fielding at the fag end steered India to 182/4 in 20 overs.
Unlike the visitors, the Chevrons got off to a rocky start, losing multiple wickets inside the powerplay. Avesh Khan and Khaleel Ahmed struck with the new ball followed to curb them to 37/3 by the sixth over. Right after, Washington Sundar came into the attack and removed Sikandar Raza and Johnathan Campbell in the seventh over itself. With the score reading 39/5, Dion Myers and Clive Madande eases the stage with an observative approach leading Zimbabwe to 60/5 in ten overs. While Sundar and Bishnoi bowled tight, Abhishek Sharma and Shivam Dube together conceded 39 runs in three overs before the Tamil Nadu-based all-rounder broke the 77-run stand in the 17th over. With the score reflecting 119/7 in 17 overs, Avesh’s six-run 18th over paved the way for a counterpunch from Wellington Masakadza and Myers, helping Zimbabwe to reach the 150-run mark. Eventually, India earned a convincing 23-run win with the Chevrons never in the game and trailing 2-1 in the series.
