‌ENG vs WI | Twitter and Sammy awed by Pooran’s gargantuan six embarrassing Mark Wood’s rocket

Fierce contests between two units often test the strength and skills of individuals in team sports. In a game of bat versus ball, Nicholas Pooran showed where he belonged in modern T20 cricket by hammering a 147 kph rocket from Mark Wood in the second Super Eight game of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

Winning the toss and electing to field first in West Indies’ most high-scoring venue so far in the competition, Jos Buttler’s men were pushed on the back foot by the West Indies top-order. Brandon King and Johnson Charles helped the hosts pile up 54 runs inside the powerplay before Nicholas Pooran replaced King due to a groin injury and took down England’s speedster Mark Wood.

Arriving on the back of a 98 against Afghanistan in St Lucia, the wicketkeeper-batter looked determined to push his side on a dominating front against England as Johnson Charles fist-pumped him before the former faced a delivery. As Wood returned to bowl his second over after the powerplay, Pooran slammed a cross-batted stroke on a fuller delivery near the legs to help the ball swirl into the stands. The ball was pitched in the slot for an in-form batter like Pooran and the southpaw did not hesitate to embarrass a 147 kph delivery by smashing a 95-meter six. Seeing the audacious nature of the swashbuckler, West Indies head coach and two-time World Cup winning captain, Daren Sammy was seen awed at the dugout, sending similar vibes across the Twitterverse.
