Few things never change, and Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s stumping brilliance in cricket might follow a similar pattern. The former Indian captain displayed his mastermind work behind the stumps against Royal Challengers Bengaluru at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium, drawing the first wicket for CSK.

Eyeing to attain back-to-back wins in the 2025 Indian Premier League, Ruturaj Gaikwad, the CSK captain, decided to field first after winning the toss. The ploy seemed to backfire initially when Phil Salt and Virat Kohli smacked the opposition bowlers for five boundaries in the first couple of overs. As the Englishman looked to epitomise their explosive batting, the duo faced some bowling heat from Noor Ahmad before Dhoni’s lightning quick hands extracted the first wicket.

After conceding eight runs in the first five balls of the eight over, Noor bowled a fuller than a good length delivery at the stumps that turned away from Salt. The batter tried to execute an inside out off the googly and ended up getting beaten on the outside edge. In the meantime, Dhoni, behind the stumps, whipped the bails in a jiffy and appealed for a stump dismissal. As the square leg umpire sent it upstairs, it was revealed that the Englishman’s back foot was in the air marginally. To everyone’s surprise, the bails dislodged at the right time for CSK, and the Chepauk crowd went ablaze over Dhoni’s quick hands.

Cockiness has always been a de-facto part of the trade for pacers, a principle epitomized by Stuart Broad's famous invention of the celebrappeal that relegates umpires to the role of a spectator. However, the move heavily backfired on Chennai Super Kings on Friday, much to Virat Kohli's respite.
