GG-W vs UPW-W | Twitter stunned as Devine’s blunder leads Fulmali to sacrifice wicket in hilarious runout
Miscommunications while running between wickets are common, but Sophie Devine attained a new low during the WPL game against UP Warriorz in Vadodara. The Gujarat Giants all-rounder stood at her crease watching the ball even as partner Bharti Fulmali kept running before sacrificing her wicket.
Captain Ashleigh Gardner struggled before getting dismissed in the 10th over, while Beth Mooney also followed a couple of overs later to put the Giants in a fix. That put two of the home side’s pinch-hitters, Sophie Devine and Bharti Fulmali, together in the middle. Though the pair was unable to find the fence in the first two overs of their partnership, they were well set to find the big hits in the home run.
But a horrific brainfade from Devine cost Fulmali her wicket in the first ball of the 16th over. The Kiwi all-rounder tried to clear the mid-wicket fence off leg-spinner Asha Sobhana but unfortunately found Phoebe Litchfield lining up for the catch. Just as the catch was about to be taken, Devine turned back and took the initial steps towards the dugout.
But Fulmali started her run as the usually safe Litchfield dropped a sitter, with Devine surprised to see her partner close to her. The Aussie, however, was quick to recover and threw the ball to the bowler, with Asha making no mistake with both batters caught at the striker’s end.
Devine was still unaware that her catch was dropped as a heartbroken Fulmali started her walk to the pavilion, instead. The TV umpire was called in to check who was closer to the bowling crease at the time the stumps were broken, and replays showed Fulmali out of the crease as she ran back to save Devine’s wicket.
Twitter was in disbelief as the usually alert Devine’s gaffe cost Fulmali her wicket in a hilarious runout.
It happens!
