Report | PSG want Diego Simeone to replace Thomas Tuchel
Paris Saint Germain are reportedly interested in bringing Atletico Madrid coach Diego Simeone to the Parc des Princes. Thomas Tuchel has failed to deliver a successful UEFA Champions League campaign last term for the French side, a trophy that the Qatari owned club have been craving for a long time.
French Ligue 1 side Paris Saint Germain have set their sights on bringing Diego Simeone as their next manager to replace Thomas Tuchel. The former Borussia Dortmund coach has come under pressure for his unsuccessful attempts in the Champions League despite having a world-class squad at his disposal. The German’s team were handed a shock exit in the Champions League last season by Manchester United. On a domestic front, Tuchel has also failed to completely dominate domestically as the team have lost a couple of domestic trophies, a very rare feat.
Whispers are running around Paris that the club owners feel a managerial change will be necessary to win the Champions League and as reported by AS, Diego Simeone is set to be a favoured choice. The Atlético Madrid manager has led the Liga side to two Champions League finals with considerably fewer resources and is seen in Paris as a guarantee of advancement on the continental front. What remains to be decided though is what any potential replacement for Tuchel will have to work with.
Neymar is unlikely to remain in Paris beyond the summer and Real Madrid are expected to make a serious attempt to lure Kylian Mbappe to the Spanish capital which could be problematic. Edinson Cavani has not been offered a new contract and there are question marks over the future of Julian Draxler while free-scoring Mauro Icardi is on loan from Inter Milan. The AS report further added that PSG will hope to take advantage of Antoine Griezmann’s situation at Barcelona as the Frenchman has found it difficult to adjust to the new surroundings.
The Blaugrana are still hopeful of signing Neymar and Griezmann could be used as a part of the deal, which means that if every piece fits in the puzzle, a Simeone-Griezmann reunification could be well on the cards next season.
