Tottenham will give us tough time, suggests Jurgen Klopp
Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp has suggested that despite the current turbulent situation Tottenham are still a top side and will give them a tough time. Mauricio Pochettino’s men have been very inconsistent since reaching last season's Champions League final and have had a poor start to this season.
Tottenham have struggled in the Premier League despite making some big-money signings in the summer transfer window in the form of Tanguay Ndombele and Giovani Lo Celso. Spurs have fallen to 7th place with 12 points in the league table after a latest in the series of disappointing results, a draw against last-placed Watford. Liverpool, meanwhile, have maintained their form from last season and top the Premier League with eight wins from their opening nine league games.
Last year’s Champions League final replay is on the cards as Liverpool takes on Spurs on Sunday and in an interview, Jurgen Klopp went on to admit just how important this game is for both sides. The former Borussia Dortmund boss also added that no matter how many points Tottenham have, they will still be a tough opponent to play against.
“We won the Champions League final, we know that. I think we were very respectful in that moment with our celebrations but still we were the ones on the other side that night. That is another additional motivation to put some things right, that is all clear, but in the end, it is a football match between two really good teams,” said Klopp to the Sky Sports.
“The situation around will not make a massive difference. We will not be that confident that absolutely nothing can happen to us and they will not… I don't know how many points they have but they will not play like a team with the points tally they have.”
Both the English teams were victorious in their Champions League games during the midweek with Tottenham beating Red Star Belgrade and European champions Liverpool winning away at Genk. But it’s the North Londoner’s win that have hit the newspapers with Mauricio Pochettino and company struggling to make an impact. Yet despite that Jurgen Klopp went on to admit that Spurs are still a top side in the Premier League and will be a tough team to play against.
“They are a top side in the Premier League and they will be a top side the whole season in the Premier League. We have to respect that and play the best football we can play. Football is like this. From time to time, things don't work out.
“We saw that in the game [against Red Star], and it was not only that game, in the other games when the results were not really there they had good moments as well. It is not like they forgot how to play football,” said the former Borussia Dortmund boss.
