Tottenham Enter Race for Mateus Fernandes as West Ham Demand £80m
Tottenham Hotspur have joined Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain and Real Madrid in the race to sign West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes. The 21 year old impressed in his debut season after joining for £38 million from Southampton and made 38 appearances across all competitions.
In the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have entered the race to sign West Ham United midfielder Mateus Fernandes, adding further competition to an already crowded battle for the highly rated 21 year old. Manchester United, Paris Saint Germain and Real Madrid are also keeping a close watch on the Portuguese midfielder, who impressed during his first season at West Ham after joining from Southampton for £38 million last year. Fernandes made 38 appearances in all competitions and established himself as one of the club’s standout performers despite West Ham's relegation to the Championship.
The London club have reportedly placed an £80 million valuation on the midfielder as they look to protect one of their most valuable assets. However, reports suggest Fernandes would prefer a move to Manchester United if he leaves this summer. Tottenham’s interest is being driven by manager Roberto De Zerbi, who is also pushing for a deal to sign Newcastle United midfielder Sandro Tonali. Spurs recently strengthened their squad with the arrivals of Jan Paul van Hecke for £52 million, while Andrew Robertson and Marcos Senesi joined on free transfers.
West Ham remain determined to keep their key players and are targeting an immediate return to the Premier League. Shareholder Daniel Kretinsky has insisted the club are not under financial pressure to sell and that promotion remains their only objective. Meanwhile, former England striker Michael Owen believes Fernandes would be an ideal signing for Manchester United and could form an excellent midfield partnership with Kobbie Mainoo.
