Video | 38-year old Chris Gayle shows that age is just a number with a stunning diving catch
As they say so often in cricket, catches win matches and when the wicket is of Rajasthan Royals skipper Ajinkya Rahane that makes it even more spectacular. Chris ‘Universe Boss’ Gayle has often been criticised for his lack of fielding prowess but he silenced fans with his stunning effort tonight.
Kings XI Punjab have looked in top form this year with an impressing bowling unit and a strong batting order with the likes of KL Rahul, Chris Gayle, Karun Nair and Mayank Agarwal putting up some good scores on the board. In contrast, Rajasthan find themselves in the lower half of the table as they aim to get into the top four for a play-off opportunity.
The Royals were put to bat by Ashwin at the Holkar stadium and Jos Buttler and D’arcy Short stepped onto the crease to open the innings. Short was quick to depart back to the pavilion as his dismal run of form continued courtesy of Andrew Tye and Ajinkya Rahane was next to bat as he entered at number three. Ashwin then introduced dynamic all-rounder Axar Patel into the attack with an aim to pressurise the home team. That move worked like a charm as Patel immediately got rid of RR skipper Rahane, but it was ‘Universe Boss’ Chris Gayle who deserved the real credit.
The big man dove forwards to grasp onto Rahane's shot which was traveling in the air and managed to hold onto the ball as he hit the ground. Gayle looked ecstatic at his own effort as the on-field umpires opted to go for a video referral just to confirm that Gayle did indeed hold onto the ball. After a brief moment of confusion, that saw Rahane make his way off the field and Sanju Samson walk in, the umpires finally declared Rahane out as he made his way back to the pavilion, still in shock.
