India vs Windies | Sunil Gavaskar slam selectors for resting Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah for Test series
Sunil Gavaskar has lashed out at the selectors for not including Bhuvaneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah in the squad for the two-match Test series against Windies. Gavaskar has also added that the absence of two pacers offers an opportunity for Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur to prove themselves.
India rested both Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Jasprit Bumrah after the tough assignment in the Asia Cup in which India had to play six matches within a space of 10 days. Keeping the forthcoming ODI series and the Australia series in eye, this seemed like a logical decision to make, but Gavaskar is not happy with that.
“India resting both Bhuvneshwar and Bumrah is a surprise, for it shows that Test matches don’t seem to matter for the selectors. Were both the bowlers asked if they wanted a break? If a break has to be given do that in the limited overs internationals, but not Test cricket, for if Test cricket is to survive it needs the best players available all the time. Their absence gives a chance for Shardul Thakur and Mohammad Siraj to show what they are capable of and try and cement their places for the tour to Australia,” he wrote in TOI.
One man's loss is another's gain. Resting the two star bowlers also provided the Indian think-tank to include the likes of Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Umesh Yadav, and Shardul Thakur in the scheme of things. And Gavaskar feels that it will be an opportunity for Shardul and Siraj to prove their worth.
“Their absence gives a chance for Shardul Thakur and Mohammad Siraj to show what they are capable of and try and cement their places for the tour to Australia,” he wrote.
However, the little master is unhappy with the scheduling and stated that a two-match series after a five-match hard-fought series doesn't make any sense.
“A two-match series after a series involving five Tests makes little sense, but then international schedules today are so tight that it’s tough to fit in the number of games that a cricket lover wants. Ideally, a three-match series gives both teams a chance to win than a series involving two Tests where honours could be even if both win one each and no third game left to decide who the winner is” Gavaskar observed.
