India vs England| Win against India at par with winning the Ashes, says Trevor Bayliss

The number one team in the ICC Test rankings failed to keep up with the responsibility that has come along with this title. Though team India didn't lose its ranking, it has definitely lost its consistency and credibility to put up a good show on the field and win matches.

India struggled throughout the series against England as their batsmen failed to cope up with the, at times severe conditions, in England. The bowlers, however, stayed solid and tried their best to restrict as many runs as possible but all their efforts were gone in vain with the other failing to occupy the crease. The English players, although inconsistent at time, performed really when it was needed the most.

Three of the two England wins went down to the wire, hence, it was obvious England coach Bayliss found the series win against India akin to winning against Australia at the Ashes. 

“It is right up there with beating Australia in the Ashes. Obviously India are a very good team, the number one team, and to knock them off is a very good feeling. There were some difficult conditions, especially on Day One. We have said before, under a bit of pressure these guys have got a bit of character which is a good sign going forward.”said Bayliss after England sealed the series with a 60-run win in the fourth Test, reported PTI.

English Test side might now undergo a lot of changes after the pending departure of Alastair Cook, who has announced his retirement after the current series. Bayliss accepted that Cook's departure might workout for Joe Root, who has been eager to bat at position number four. He also spoke about the possibilities of Moeen Ali playing at number three just like he did in the fourth Test as he felt that the off-spinners might also perform well with the bat in that position at the right conditions. 

“I’m sure there will be discussions on a few things in the next couple of days. Batsmen would like to have a settled position in the order. You always find in any era or team there are one or two guys who have to be a bit flexible. Moeen has been that guy for us over the last few years. When Root asked him if he was keen to do it he jumped at it. In the right conditions, I would not put it past him. He works hard at his game. In spinning conditions, he can cover that pretty well at the moment but his challenge will be on the faster wickets but we haven’t got any of those for a while,” he said.

Moeen Ali has failed to perform at number three position in the fourth Test and Baylis has been of the opinion that Ali's number three position might not be permanent with Root likely to get back to it. 

“Joe has always said he wants to bat at four. He understood where I was coming from that if we had a number three averaging 50 to allow him to bat at four, that would be handy. But I thought it was for the best of the team he batted at three,” he said. “Hopefully we can find someone who can do a decent job at number three and he can bat where he feels most comfortable. He has taken one for the team in that respect.” Bayliss concluded.
