I would like to see Shreyas Iyer at number four, opines Anil Kumble
Anil Kumble has expressed his desire to see Shreyas Iyer bat at number four for India in the ODIs. In Shikhar Dhawan’s absence, KL Rahul is set to open the innings which will leave open a spot at number four that Kumble wants to be filled by Iyer in the upcoming ODI series against West Indies.
With T20I leg of the West Indies tour of India done and dusted, all eyes are set on the three-match ODI series starting from Sunday (15 December) in Chennai. Former Indian captain and coach Anil Kumble wants a quality batter like Shreyas Iyer to bat at the crucial number four position. Shikhar Dhawan, who is out of the series due to an injury, is replaced by Test opener Mayank Agarwal in the squad.
However, Agarwal is unlikely to get a run from the start of the series. KL Rahul, who had a tremendous run in the recently concluded T20I leg is all set to open in the ODIs with Rohit Sharma.
"With Shikhar (Dhawan) not being there it again gives KL Rahul chance to open the batting. We have seen Shreyas Iyer's quality and he has grown in stature, so I would like him to be at number four," Kumble told the official broadcast channel.
West Indies lost T20I series 2-1 to the hosts and Kumble is hopeful of the Indian bowlers to fire against the attacking Wendies batting during the ODIs.
"I'd like to see the bowling come through because against West Indies it would be a challenge. They're all-powerful hitters. The surfaces are going to be good and so, you would want the bowling to come good," added Kumble.
