Hardik Pandya got into the mood instantly today and let his bat do the talking against Todd Astle. However, he was clearly dejected and frustrated after his dismissal despite Trent Boult taking a clean catch as he thought the waist-high ball should have been declared as a no-ball right away.

One of the most confusing things for an umpire to keep an eye on is the waist-high no-ball and it often gets misinterpreted to the opposition’s advantage, cue - Rohit Sharma in the 2015 World Cup quarter-final against Bangladesh. Today, the umpire clearly avoided such a circumstance, but Pandya was frustrated by that.

The incident in question occurred on the last ball of the 49th over when Pandya smashed James Neesham’s high full toss over square leg, but the miscued shot resulted in the ball going too high. Once the chance of a six was ruled out on that ball, Boult saw an opening as he went back to get hold of the catch, however, with a sense of doubt.

Despite that, he managed to gobble up a spectacular catch after running back from square leg and instantly returned that to the bowler with no reaction whatsoever. Pandya was confident that it was a no-ball and completed his run, but by seeing everyone in a tangle, he was confused. The shot also made him frustrated as he smashed his hand on his head, but such was his confidence that he didn’t return back to the pavilion.

The overall process forced the umpire to confirm that with the third umpire Nigel Llong, who upon checking the replay, found out that it was below the waist and declared the Indian all-rounder out. While returning to the pavilion, Pandya looked dejected about the manner in which he was dismissed.
