ICC World Cup 2019 | Not worried about Shikhar Dhawan’s departure, states Jasprit Bumrah
Jasprit Bumrah has stated that Shikhar Dhawan getting injured when he was in such fine form and getting ruled out of the tournament is rather unlucky but life has to move on regardless. He added that India have enough quality to get over his absence while also briefly talking about India’s pacers.
On Wednesday, the Board of Control for Cricket in India confirmed that Dhawan’s fracture is more serious than it was initially thought to be and hence he has been ruled out of the quadrennial mega event. Rishabh Pant was officially declared as his replacement for the rest of the World Cup after seeking ICC’s permission to name him as the same.
With Dhawan having hit a scintillating century against Australia and having been adjudged man of the match in his last game for the Men in Blue, Bumrah feels that team India cannot afford to lament on the loss for too long.
"It is unfortunate he (Dhawan) is out of the World Cup. He played really good innings against Australia. We are a good side and we are not worried about it. It was an unfortunate incident which happened but we have to move forward," Bumrah said at a press conference on Thursday.
In the match against Pakistan, Vijay Shankar was brought in to replace Dhawan and he made quite an impression, picking up crucial wickets while also managing to remain not out after a short cameo. However, the 28-year-old was hit by a Bumrah ball in the toe and was reportedly a doubt for India’s next match, but he has been spotted bowling in the nets putting a bed to all such speculations.
“It was unfortunate that Vijay got injured on my ball but he is fine,” Bumrah said referring to the incident.
India play their next match against Afghanistan on Saturday and will aim to keep up their unbeaten streak in the World Cup so far. While the Asian opponents are known to be good batsmen against spin bowlers, their troubles against pace have been obvious in the ongoing tournament. Thus, India may replace either of Chahal or Kuldeep Yadav with Mohammed Shami for the game. When asked about how Shami, Bhuvneshwar Kumar and him would handle the new ball, Bumrah gave a very relaxed answer.
"The best preparation for me is to bowl and that is what I am doing. Personally, for me, it does not mean any difference as three of us are focusing on the game," the world’s number one bowler said.
"We are not taking any team lightly. We are focusing all the teams in the same manner," he signed off.
