Sunil Gavaskar heaped praise on the new-look England ODI team under the leadership of Eoin Morgan and has backed them to be the favourites ahead of the start of the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup. Gavaskar added that a hot English summer could add to the excitement of the World Cup in England.

The England cricket team have managed to register two back-to-back wins against Ireland and Pakistan in their warm-up matches in the build-up to this year’s World Cup which will start on May 30 and be played in England & Wales. Former India opener turned commentator Sunil Gavaskar has talked about the chances of the home team to go all the way in the global showpiece.

“England are the favourites. Simply because of the way they are playing cricket, the complete turnaround in their cricketing attitude and approach after their disastrous 2015 World Cup. England have got a very good team, they have got lots of confidence. You have seen them in all the recent matches and they have been playing outstanding cricket,” Gavaskar told Reuters in an interview.

Morgan & Co. have impressed in their brand of cricket in the last couple of years and have come out on top in bilateral ODI series against defending champions Australia, New Zealand, Sri Lanka and India.

The 69-year old former Mumbai cricketer added that a hot English summer could add to the excitement of the upcoming World Cup as the pitches would be drier could be a treat for the batsmen throughout the tournament.

“This should be a very, very interesting tournament and I think the format is the best you can have because you are playing every team unlike in two groups. You can have a bogey team with whom you lose in bilateral matches but they could be in another group and you might never play them. So you can win without having played your bogey team (in the past) while this format, where each team plays each other, I think is the best.”
