IND v SA | Best to leave judgements about Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma for later, says Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly reckons it would be best to reserve their judgements on India’s latest Test opening duo Mayank Agarwal and Rohit Sharma till after a consistent run of matches. Ganguly further added his opinion on India’s wicket-keeper dilemma between Wriddhiman Saha and Rishabh Pant for Tests.
Agarwal found himself in the Indian team against Australia Down Under after Prithvi Shaw picked up an ankle injury and has impressed in the opening role in the few Tests he has played. Rohit, meanwhile, got the promotion up the order for the South Africa series, after an inconsistent run of performances saw KL Rahul being dropped. Although the duo had never previously played together in international cricket, they put on a show on day one and two of the first Test against the Proteas at Vizag.
They shared a 317-run stand and both struck big centuries — Rohit with 176 and Agarwal with 215. But Ganguly refused to jump on the bandwagon, like most fans and pundits have, to shower praise on India’s latest experiment in the longest version of the game.
"The problem is we come to conclusions very quickly. With one hundred we will say he's your first choice opener and so on. But with a couple of failures you would say otherwise. This has to stop," Ganguly told PTI.
"Any young player who is doing well is a very good sign for Indian cricket. He played well in Australia. He struggled a bit in the West Indies. But in the first Test at home, he's got a double against South Africa. Let him play for a year or so then will judge how good he is," Ganguly said.
"It's the same thing for Rohit Sharma -- he has to perform consistently (like Mayank). It's just the first Test match for him as an opener. He (Rohit) is a fantastic player and hopefully he continues to play well because Rohit Sharma in-form will strengthen Indian batting," he continued.
Meanwhile, Ganguly seconded Kohli’s opinion that Saha is the #1 wicket-keeper in the world, but noted that the little success that Pant has had forces Kohli to make a call.
"He (Saha) is our own boy... He is the best wicketkeeper in the world. Rishabh has also been very successful. Now, it's a call Kohli has to take, whom he wants to play in the long term," Ganguly added.
