If cricket was an academic subject it wouldn’t be so easy with the wide range of rules and regulations. Even someone of Gautam Gambhir’s stature was seen bemused over a run denial by the match officials, leading to a heated debate as KKR squared off against PBKS in Eden Gardens, Kolkata on Friday.

Winning the toss, interim captain Sam Curran opted to field first under a humid atmosphere. KKR's dynamic opening duo of Phil Salt and Sunil Narine elected a gung-ho approach to dismantle the opposition bowlers. On the back of a 138-run opening stand, the hosts commanded swiftly during the innings. Although PBKS pegged back with a couple of wickets during the middle overs phase, an unprecedented event caught everyone’s attention with furious Gambhir arguing with a match official.

On the sixth ball of the 14th over, Rahul Chahar came over the wicket and bowled a short ball wide outside the stumps that Russel slashed towards cover for a sliding Ashutosh Sharma stop. The fielder made a wayward throw towards the striker’s end, the KKR duo looked to run for an overthrow. However, the umpire ruled out the run for a dead ball as Venkatesh Iyer and Russell were late to complete the single. Moments later, KKR head coach Gambhir was seen indulging in a heated conversation with the match referee regarding the controversial decision.

As per MCC laws, 20.1.1 and 20.1.1.1, the ball becomes dead when it is finally settled in the hands of the wicket-keeper or off the bowler.

The Twitterverse was perplexed by the situation and here’s how they reacted.

WHat was it?
