Serie A side AS Roma have confirmed that rising starlet Nicolo Zaniolo has torn the anterior cruciate ligament in his left-knee while on international duty with Italy. The 21-year-old is considered to be a future star for the Azzurri and had only recently recovered from an earlier ACL tear.

Despite many hoping for a different result after Nicolo Zainolo limped off the field, AS Roma have confirmed that the 21-year-old has suffered another anterior cruciate ligament injury. While the second injury is to his left knee, it comes less than a year after the Roma starlet tore the ACL in his right-knee with him missing six months of the 2019/20 season. However, the lockdown allowed Zaniolo to recover in time to make eight appearances in the Serie A with him impressing enough to earn a spot for Roberto Mancini’s Italy team.

But on his seventh cap for the national side, the 21-year-old was forced off the field after a nothing collision with Donny van de Beek. While many hoped for the best, AS Roma have confirmed that the former Inter youngster will be set for another enforced spell on the sidelines with reports indicating that he could miss up to eight months. A statement from the Serie A club confirmed that Zaniolo will undergo surgery before he starts his recovery.

“Nicolò Zaniolo will undergo surgery on Wednesday after MRI scans today confirmed the player has suffered a complete tear to the anterior cruciate ligament of his left knee. The 21-year-old suffered the injury while playing for Italy against Holland on Monday evening,” reads AS Roma’s statement.
