Sunil Gavaskar praises "underrated" Eoin Morgan's match-winning innings
Sunil Gavaskar has commended Eoin Morgan's matchwinning 38-ball 51 knock that helped guide England to victory over India in the first T20 in Kanpur. The former Indian star also claimed that the lack of partnerships in the Indian innings was the main reason for India's defeat in the match.
While appearing on a show for NDTV, Gavaskar said that Eoin Morgan was an underrated player who deserved more credit for the way he approaches the game. He added that Morgan, who was released by the Sunrisers Hyderabad for the upcoming IPL, would face no problem in finding a new IPL club who would back him.
"Generally, the players who are rated highly are the ones who play in the IPL. Morgan hasn't had too many opportunities in the IPL and I understand that the franchise that had him has released him," Gavaskar said.
"I think that there will be many franchises who will go for his services because he is an impact player. He can change the game in a matter of overs and he has the ability to tailor his game according to the needs of the situation. He started off slowly in the match because two wickets had fallen. So he played himself in and then he and Root opened their shoulders and took England home."
Batting first, India struggled to build a convincing partnership throughout their innings, with the largest one being 34 for the first wicket between KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. With wickets falling at regular intervals, India could only manage a score of 147 in their allotted 20 overs.
"I think India kept losing wickets regularly. They did not have any partnership worth the name. I think you must have partnerships. If you have a 60-80 run partnership it propels your score close to 200," Gavaskar told NDTV.
"So when your opponent has to chase at or 10 runs an over, they are under pressure. Since India were dismissed for a score of below 150, the asking rate was below 7.5."
England had struggled on this tour, winning just one match before the T20 series - a dead-rubber in the ODI series. However, the original master blaster believes that all formats considered, the T20 squad is England's forte.
"Look at the way they performed in the ICC World Twenty20 last year. They reached the finals and almost won it but for those last four deliveries. So, yes, their T20 team is their best team in all formats of the game," Gavaskar concluded.
