Virat Kohli surpasses Mohammad Azharuddin's tally of centuries as Indian captain
Virat Kohli scored the 17th century of his career and his 10th as the Indian captain surpassing Mohammad Azharuddin's tally of nine centuries and just behind Sunil Gavaskar, who scored 11 tons as the Indian skipper. Kohli's century helped India to set up a colossal target of 550 runs for Sri Lanka.
Virat Kohli flicked a Dilruwan Perrera delivery in the 52nd over of the Indian innings on the fourth day of the Galle Test to bring up his 10th century as the Indian captain. He took just 44 innings to surpass Mohammad Azharuddin's tally of 9 centuries in 68 innings. Kohli now stands behind Sunil Gavaskar, who tops the table of the most centuries by an Indian captain, 11. The century also took his Test batting average to over 50.
The Indian skipper stitched a 133-run partnership with Abhinav Mukund followed by a 51-run stand with Ajinkya Rahane to set up a target of 550 runs for Sri Lanka.
The innings also meant Kohli became the fifth batsman on the list of 'Fewest innings to ten Test hundreds as captain'. Australian legend Don Bradman tops the table with 26 innings followed by Mahela Jayawardene (36) and current Australian skipper Steve Smith(37) at second and third respectively. Kohli lost the fourth spot to Steve Waugh by a margin of just one innings.
