Paul Farbrace backs Joe Root to learn after being axed from T20 starting XI
Paul Farbrace, England's assistant coach, believes that Test specialist Joe Root will learn from his flaws after he was dropped from the starting XI for the third T20I. Eoin Morgan had earlier revealed that the conversation he had before dropping Root from the starting XI was extremely tough.
At one point in time, England leader - Joe Root, Indian skipper - Virat Kohli, former Australian skipper - Steve Smith, and New Zealand captain - Kane Williamson were all regarded as the rising stars of international cricket. While Kohli and Williamson continue on that trajectory, the stocks of Smith and Root have seen a considerable decline in the last six months or so.
While Smith’s decline was due to the entire ‘Sandpapergate’ saga, Root had other problems to blame for his failure to emerge as a sure-shot star. Root just managed to score a first-ball duck and nine from 10 deliveries in the two matches he played against the Indians before he was dropped from the final T20I, which skipper Morgan later revealed was an extremely tough decision to make.
But assistant coach, Paul Farbrace, who was at the helm of the affairs of the team during the T20I series in place of head coach Trevor Bayliss, was confident that the axing of the 27-year old from the starting XI would serve as a learning experience for Root.
"And I think any experience like he's had over the past few days will definitely help him. Players learn from players and I'm sure he'll be watching the way Morgs talks to the team, the way he goes about things, the way that he makes the decisions that he makes - and I'm sure those two will have lots of conversations about the role of being England cricket captain whether its with red or white ball. I think he'll definitely learn from that," Farbrace told Cricbuzz.
Farbrace and national captain Morgan both confirmed that Root will come back into the playing XI for the ODI series but the batsman’s omission must have taken a toll on Root as he had been desperate to impress with his T20 game but failed due to the lack of game time. Root was also overlooked in this year’s IPL auction as all eight franchises opted against splashing out the cash to buy the player.
However, Farbrace, who is rumoured to be first in line to replace Bayliss when he departs at the end of his contract as head coach of the English team, reiterated that Root still remained key to England’s T20 plans in the near future.
"The key is when you have players in your side under pressure, you support and back your players publicly. My view at that stage was to be very supportive of Joe.
"I still think, and I genuinely believe it, that if England are to be successful in T20 cricket over the next couple of years leading into the World Cup, Joe Root will play a magnificent and big part in that. He is our best player - a fantastic player in all forms of the game. Yes, he hasn't got any runs in the last couple of games and yes that does make you vulnerable in any side. Runs are your currency - that's what you're selected on," Farbrace added.
